What is Postpartum Psychosis?

Postpartum Psychosis is a rare but serious mental health condition that can occur after childbirth. It’s different from the “baby blues” or postpartum depression. This is because it causes more severe symptoms that affect your thoughts, feelings, and actions.

Women with Postpartum Psychosis may experience:

  • Extreme mood swings
  • Confusion or disorientation
  • Hallucinations or delusions
  • Feeling detached from reality
  • Difficulty recognizing or connecting with your baby
  • Racing thoughts or trouble concentrating
  • Severe anxiety or paranoia

Postpartum Psychosis is a medical emergency that requires immediate attention. It is important to reach out for help as soon as possible if you notice any of these symptoms. The good news is that with the right treatment and support, recovery is very possible.

Postpartum Psychosis Treatment Options

At Milton Recovery Centers, we offer treatment programs specifically designed for mothers dealing with Postpartum Psychosis. Our approach is caring and effective, giving you the support you need to heal, find stability, and reconnect with your baby.

We offer two main treatment options for Postpartum Psychosis:

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) is ideal for mothers who need intensive support during the day but can return home at night. In this program, you’ll receive a combination of one-on-one therapy, group therapy, and complementary treatments like mindfulness.

This program provides more care and support as you work through the challenges of Postpartum Psychosis.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

If you need ongoing support but can still manage your daily responsibilities, our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) may be the right fit. IOP offers flexible treatment with individual therapy, group therapy, and skill-building sessions.

This program suits mothers who want support during the day while being able to return to their family in the evenings, helping you balance recovery with daily life.

Gentle Care for Postpartum Psychosis

At Milton Recovery Centers, we understand that dealing with Postpartum Psychosis can feel isolating and overwhelming. That’s why we take a holistic approach to your treatment, offering a range of therapies designed to help you reconnect with yourself, your baby, and your life.

We use the following evidence-based therapies to guide your healing:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT): CBT helps you identify and change negative thought patterns, allowing you to regain control over your emotions and thought processes.

  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT): DBT helps you manage your emotions and cope with intense feelings in a healthy way.

  • Trauma-Informed Care: We recognize that childbirth and the postpartum period can be emotionally and physically challenging. Our trauma-informed approach is gentle and focused on your well-being, helping you heal from past experiences while moving forward.

  • Group Therapy: Connecting with other mothers who understand what you’re going through can provide comfort and insight. Group therapy allows you to share your experiences in a safe, supportive space.

  • Holistic Therapies: We offer mindfulness practices, relaxation techniques, and stress-reduction strategies that help you reconnect with your body and mind.
