What Are Psychotic Disorders?
Psychotic disorders are a group of mental illnesses characterized by abnormal thinking and perceptions. These conditions can cause individuals to lose touch with reality, leading to symptoms such as hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking, and difficulty functioning in daily life.
There are several types of psychotic disorders, including schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, delusional disorder, and brief psychotic disorder. Each disorder has its own unique set of symptoms and challenges.
Schizophrenia is perhaps the most well-known psychotic disorder. It typically develops in late adolescence or early adulthood and can significantly impact a person’s ability to think clearly, manage emotions, and relate to others. Schizoaffective disorder combines symptoms of schizophrenia with mood disorders such as depression or bipolar disorder.
Delusional disorder involves fixed false beliefs that persist despite evidence to the contrary. Brief psychotic disorder is characterized by a sudden onset of psychotic symptoms that last for a short period of time.
Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID) is a complex psychological condition in which an individual experiences the presence of two or more distinct identities or personality states. Formerly known as multiple personality disorder, DID is often a result of severe trauma experienced during childhood. (Note: DID is not classified as a psychotic disorder, but may be mentioned due to overlapping symptoms.)
